Preparation of reference material for analysis of uranium and plutonium using cellulose compound as a stabilizer

A reference material for the determinations of uranium and plutonium of spent fuel from reprocessing plants by isotope dilution mass spectrometry has been prepared. The reference material is covered with cellulose acetate butyrate as an organic stabilizer. Spikes treated like this can resist shocks encountered during transportation and prevent flaking off over long-term storage as well. The characterization of the spikes was achieved based on the metrological data, the certificate of the base materials and the verification measurements, with the certified values. The spike containing cellulose acetate butyrate was certified. The appropriateness of cellulose acetate butyrate was also investigated and proven. The material prepared in this work is commercially available as a reference material and applied to the nuclear safeguards measurement of uranium and plutonium in reprocessing plants.
